At Matobo Hills Lodge we are all about people. We work to attract and retain the best people. Being able to attract talented employees from our area, to help them and watch them grow as people as well as employees is what our lodge is all about. We are in the people business. Matobo Hills Lodge staff are guided with constant training and skills development. We broaden horizons, helping our staff attain driving licenses, guides licenses and even mixology certificates. A majority of the Matobo Hills Lodge staff are from the area.
Given comes from the village next door to our lodge. Given is a polite and gentle man who has been with the company since 2014. We are glad to have him on the team. Given works as a driver, a shopper and in the stocktaking department. Since he started working at Matobo Hills Lodge, Given has attained a driving license. He is doing a learner guides course as he dreams of becoming a professional guide one day.
Zulu is very popular with our guests (just check our TripAdvisor comments). Zulu works as a guide at Matobo Hills Lodge, and he is the man most likely to be taking you tracking White Rhino in the bush and regaling you with stories as you wonder through the caves. Zulu lives in the area and we are proud to employee Matobo Hills Lodge staff from the community.
Mpilo is from Manganganga (try saying that three times fast) which is near Hwange national park. Mpilo is a very reliable employee and she will always meet you with a smile. Mpilo works behind the bar. She is the Wiz who is going to be putting together your cocktails and serving your drinks. She loves to change her hairstyle every two weeks.
Phyllis came to Matobo Hills Lodge on an attachment from a Hotel training school for women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Phyllis has been working at Matobo Hills Lodge for more than 3 years now. Phyllis has a huge smile and a Magnetic Personality. She works in the restaurant as a waitress.
Primrose came to Matobo Hills Lodge together on attachment with Phyllis. They are a great and dynamic team in the restaurant and service department, where they give you their best services at all times. Primrose comes from a village that borders the Matobo National Park. She still participates in the local community where she is a part of a local choir and practices one of her hobbies; singing
Mthokozisi joined Matobo Hills Lodge lodge recently on attachment. Working in our attachment programme provides attachees experience in serval different departments such as front of house, housekeeping, and laundry. Mthokozisi is diligent and very hard-working, and one to look out for in the future. Mthokozisi is from Bulawayo which is located around 55 km from the Matobo Hills. Mthokozisi was a very good runner at school and enjoys athletics.
Kudzai hails from Victoria Falls and did his training at some of the most prestigious hotels in the country. He is extremely friendly which we know can be rare for a chef! Kudzi is always trying new recipes and pushing the boundaries of the kitchen. He is a baker at heart and his passion lies with desserts and pastries.
Mercy has been at the lodge for over 5 years now. She is a senior chef. Mercy is now world famous for her delicious soups, her recipes are a closely guarded Secret! Mercy’s nickname at the lodge is “Mai Makuwa” which translates to “Mrs Gossip.” If you want to know any of the latest news, she is the one to go to. A mother figure amongst the staff at Matobo Hills Lodge.
Desires home is in the mountainous eastern highlands of the country. It is a 10 hour drive to his village from the lodge. We were impressed with Desire when he came all the way to our lodge on an attachment from his hotel training school in Mutare. Desire started as a trainee chef but he has now been at the lodge for two years and has been promoted to junior chef.
Eddie is from Dete, which is a little town on the border of the Hwange National Park. He grew up surrounded by elephants and lions! Eddie has been working for the company in different positions since 2012. He is a very reliable maintenance man with a great work ethic. If there is anything needed to be fixed, Eddie is the one. In addition of being a handyman, he is a family man, and has three daughters who he is very proud of.
“MaNcube” is head of the housekeeping department with her team of four. She has been a member of the Matobo Hills Lodge staff since 2013. She is the one that will make sure that your room is extra tidy and clean to give you the absolute best experience. She is from Bulawayo and has a family of seven. In her off days, MaNcube enjoys knitting garments for her daughters. She is also a mother for the whole team at the lodge.
Frank is very much a local, his home is a short drive away from the little village of Silozwe, which borders the Matobo National Park. His area is famous for its amazing cave nearby called ” Silozwane”. Frank is fairly new at Matobo Hills Lodge having joined the team at the beginning of 2016. Frank is a talented footballer in his time off and plays for his local team when he can.
